The Basilica of the Pettoruto is one of the most famous sacred places of Calabria, so dear to the emigrants of the entire region; it is situated at San Sosti at 540 metres of altitude. It is surrounded by the last spurs of the Pollino mountain range whose peak is La Mula (1935 m)
You get to the sanctuary passing through the many bends that lead you up the mountain. Petruto, which means stony, rocky ground, is the name of the area.
The name Petruto was soon given to the sanctuary which became Sanctuary of the Pettoruto.
Going up the river Rosa, which passes through the gorge of the old roman isthmian road from Sibari to Laos, you get to the large square of the Immacolata in front of the basilica.
From here you may enjoy the suggestive view that reaches the Ionio sea.
The sanctuary of Pettoruto is a centre of spirituality, the heart of the diocese, and a meeting place where one can share religious moments.
Every year on the first Sunday of May the Cinta’s day is carried out which represents the opening day of the thanksgiving and of the pilgrimage. The anniversary began after the disastrous earthquake of 1783. The residents of San Sosti and of the near villages decided to place themselves under the Virgin Mary’s protection and created a shelter of defence for faith and hope where common people could pray. A young girl dressed in white, carries a silk-lined wicker basket adorned with flowers on her head, full with  string (twine) soaked with wax, and offers a “belt” to Our Lady on behalf of everyone. Once she reaches the sanctuary, the belt is cut in little pieces and handed to the pilgrims as signs of devotion.
